I am not arguing about the importance of Middle East oil in the intermediate term. I am afraid that Bush's reelection calculations will trump this, however. Like I said, let's watch.

In the longer term there are plenty of steps we can take to eliminate our external dependence on oil. It's a shame that Bush squandered his post 9/11 political capital on the Iraq war rather than taking some of these steps.
