The public seems divided on this. Maybe we should have a national referendum?

I'm involved in Folding@Home. It's a distributed computer program that assists researchers at Stanford Univ. to simulate protein folding to understand diseases such as Alzheimers. Government COULD do a lot to encourage the public to fund research. They could cheerlead the process. Better to encourage direct involvement and have support.

They would rather give massive subsidies to various 'sunset industries' (resource extraction or 'rustbelt' generally) instead of seeding the new industries of the future....

Bush's religious baggage. Check out ASTM. This administration, along with the FDA, has just about destroyed the cloning companies in this country.
