Or perhaps you will choose to remain ignorant and go on taking hip-shot articles from the misinformed as the absolute truth. All of the reserve components had been left in a general state of decline since the end of WWII. The decline accelerated more rapidly after the Korean War. Most reserve units, to include air, were poorly equipped or trained to handle jungle warfare in SE Asia. There were medical units, field artillery, ADA, air recon, air resupply, and other exceptional type combat support and service support units that were called up and participated in SE Asia. Of the remaining units, many of them were war traced to theaters that were known to require more conventional type warfare. Don't forget Europe, Korea, and Cuba that were still of greater cause for concern. Because of much of the above, our higher ups, in their infinite wisdom, decided to fight the war in SE Asia differently than in the past. Large military organizations were left in place for most of the duration, and soldiers were rotated in and out as fillers for the most part. So the large organizations provided little in the way of real unit integrity. They functioned largely as large shells, having small cadres, that soldiers (individuals) were run through every 12 or 13 months. But this was a cheap way of addressing a major conflict when we had many other concerns around the world. Draftees back then were paid about 40 or 50 bucks a month. This was before Nixon supported the largest pay increase in military history. In hindsight this was a very poor environment for developing unit proficiency and cohesion. Forces were never deployed like this before and were never deployed like this afterwards. Perhaps it was a cheap lesson in dollars but a very costly one in lives. Every party and administration is guilty of having its less than golden moments. You guys that are so down on the Republicans might want to read a little about McNamara's 100,000. And those of you calling Bush a warmonger might want to read up on a southern Baptist Democrat and his connections with a former Iraq and the killing of hundreds of thousands of Iranians. With the end of the cold war, all of you should have noted the increased participation of reserve component forces in recent conflicts. This has been brought about because of down-sizing on the active side, lessening of the European threat, BRAC, a renewed effort to measure relevance, and many other factors. I won't attempt to argue with anyone who can only find cowards in the Bush administration. An honest unbiased look at each of the members might give one a glimpse of real courage. Like mph or someone stated...you have to look at where a person is or has been standing or sitting. Buck
