If "America's enemies are currently hearing only weakness from the Democratic camp," it's partly because so many American's on the right are proclaiming it for partisan purposes.

It's because we have the Clinton history of it, Karen. Plus the Terrorists are reading what the Democrats are saying. It has been a constant litany of "pull out" about Iraq. And the whole ME. They veil it a little, but you can see it is there.

The spineless and the handwringers are on the left.

The Terrorists snort, and say, "a Democrat will pull out." They are right.

And it is partly from our recent history of cutting and running (Vietnam, Lebanon, Somalia), and it is partly from the demo demand that we get out of Iraq now.

Now we have Kerry preaching we should not be there...Clark preaching we fought the wrong war... Others demanding we bring the troops home asap. What should others think about us?

I am amazed by how many folks think as soon as we leave Iraq it will all be over. We could leave Iraq yesterday and the war on terror will still be in its infancy. I am sorry to say this but there are going to be many many more battles before the outcome of this war is determined.

. It seems obvious to me that what Friedman describes would be the tack than a Democratic President would take, more or less

It's not obvious to me, Karen, particularly if that Democrat is John "Hamlet" Kerry. He has not been a decisive Senator. Nothing he has said so far leads to believe that he conduct a policy with the universal approval of our so-called allies - and face it, nuance or not, we are never going to get that approval.
