I think that the history of American achievement has made many of its citizens unwillling to believe that its goverment is also capable of wrongdoing. It's misguided belief that because the principle guiding one's country are noble, that the goverment who executes them unable of wrong doing. It's a form of blind "patriotism" that will go to extreme rationalizations to justify the indifensible.
