But W. had barely settled into the Oval when Backseat clambered into the front seat.

The Washington crowd nver seemed to grasp what was already obvious in Texas prior to 2000. Bush was just a puppet.

He was selected to the Texas governor's race, a symbolic post with no real power, because he had no agenda beyond the perks of office. He had a temper, but no plan to push, no burning desires, and a deep need for validation from rich people. He was the perfect front.

It should have come as no surprise that he was immediately overshadowed by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove and anyone else who had ambitions of their own. It should also be no surprise that after 3 years he still doesn't have any opinions that aren't on the teleprompter.
