It would. But that may be the point of it all. A national system, able to negotiate prices, results in lower costs.

Here are some statistics to make your eyes pop (they are from 2001; since then US costs have skyrocketed even more relative to other countries):

The interesting thing is that a lot of these European countries and Japan have a lot older populations than us. I dread the numbers when the boomers start getting older and our age distribution is more what theirs is now.
