I don't pretend to be a policy expert here. All I did was propose a way to pay for a national health care system. The result of my proposal is that everybody will pay more for consumer goods (a lot of it made outside the US), and at the same time our companies will be relieved from having to pay huge and unpredictably growing health care expenses.

My back of the envelope calculations show that we can do this with a VAT of around 6% -- and we can exclude food. You have to remember that government is already picking up a good chunk of medical expenses via Medicare and Medicaid (something like 50%). And also, I am assuming the overall expenses will drop to around 10% of GDP, like in Canada and the most expensive European countries.

I think the net result will be a drastic reduction of the overall health care expenditures. More than enough to cover our increased military expenditures.
