Imagine the corruptness of a political party which bases the selection of their nominee on "who can beat President Bush",

I don't quite follow your reasoning that a political party that tries to select the candidate which they think will win is corrupt. But on the other hand imagine a president who so many think is so poor that the phrase "Anybody but Bush" is repeated by so many, even from many of his own former followers.
