Well, the US presidental election was very, very close last time - the Democrat candidate got the popular vote, but due to the peculiarities of the US electoral system, the popular vote doesn't select the President. Small states wield disproportionate power in the Electoral College.

The population is ever increasingly urban, and urban voters tend to vote Democrat, but the rest of the country votes, too. I think the most recent state-by-state analysis is still comfortably for Bush in the Electoral College.
