Whether Hans Blix did or would do a good job was never the issue. The job (scope and worth) is and was the real issue. You don't need the best accountant in the world to count beans if you're going to severely limit the beans he or she can look at. And there's no need in counting or inspecting anything if the outcome no longer has any consequences.

When you tell someone that if they do or don't do X and Y, then they can expect A and B, you maintain that position. You don't keep changing the standard or expected outcome when things don't go the way you would have liked for them to go.

Did Bush ask Saddam and his cabinet to surrender before the first attack was launched?
