It's pretty standard to question the relatives of mass murderers as to motive, opportunity, and the possibility of sympathetic family members.

It's called basic police work. They are called material witnesses.

That's precisely what the US has been doing in Iraq in its bid to capture those depicted in the deck of cards. Whole familieis have been rounded up, much like you described.
