There have been several interesting studies on the evolutionary benefits of female infidelity. I think they used some kind of bird as their subject. The benefit has to do with getting the support of lesser-grade, but available, males, while obtaining the genes of unavailable alpha males.

The evolutionary benefits of male infidelity are pretty obvious.
