Especially when I was hanging out at the SF club just outside the front gate of my airbase in Pleiku, Vietnam.

FL,
Not certain which club you mean. There were two.

The one closest to the road in front of the Montagnard compound was the Mike Force Club. It was the watering hole for the Special Forces Pleiku Mike Force and their Montagnards.
The other was in the "C" Company, 5th SF Group, compound across the street.

I have been in both many times. Never ever saw any drugs. I have also been in the woods with men from both units...no drugs period. Would absolutely not have been tolerated.

American SF soldiers do not do drugs...at least not in the 42 years I have been in the SF community. 99.99% of Montagnard soldiers did not drink alcohol or do drugs. Occasionally a severely wounded Yard might smoke some opium with the very old men while recuperating. I saw that once.
I have attended dozens of Montagnard rituals and ceremonies. At most a few might take a small sip of the Ceremonial rice wine. They never have drugs. I live close to 5,000 Montagnard refugees in NC. They still shun drugs and alcohol and those who use them.

I have also been in both Pleiku USAF Clubs to eat with Spooky crews. Never saw any sign of drugs there either. They did have damn good steaks though. Outstanding USAF hospital off the runway too. I spent 11 days in there getting patched up (Mar 69).

I saw airmen in SF Clubs a lot. SF is well known for generously buying airmen "thank you" beers. But drugs in an SF club?...nevah happen GI!...unless perhaps an airman had some hidden in his pocket.
