coug,
Most Americans have such busy lives that they're unwilling to take the time necessary to examine candidates, especially with such a large field. They try to take a shortcut for primaries & jump on the momentum train already in progress. Apparently the national media has observed that phenomenon & learned they can easily manipulate the primary electorate. This yr the manipulation was more obvious than usual.

I agree that a nation-wide primary day would be best solution; however, many states have decided those funds were wasted in past since the party's nominee is selected far in advance. Many primaries have already been cancelled. IMO that's a regression for democracy.
