Medicare is not a good model for health care coverage at all.

Health care insurance should NOT cover ongoing costs (checkups, etc.). It should cover catastrophic care or major expenses such as surgery.

The main reason for rising health care costs is that the elderly demand treatment, but they aren't paying their fair share of the costs.

A secondary reason is that innovations are more expensive at first so that the development costs can be recouped. Statins and COX-2 inhibitors did not exist 20 years ago. Why shouldn't they be much more expensive than older generic treatments for high cholestrerol or rheumatoid arthritis?

One way to reduce costs is to stifle innovation. Making Medicare universal is a great way to do just that.
