Discharge does not make up for disappearing. GW got into the Guard because of his last name and let out early because of his last name. Clearly the Texas CO turned a blind eye to GW's wanderings while granting his wishes.
The question remains, where was GW in 1972? This is not going to go away until he admits the truth. He was somewhere doing something. Where and what?
