He and several other members of his unit were captured behind enemy lines. They spend several years in a POW camp as well as some castle the nazi's had taken over. They were starved and tortured. When they were liberated, he still had the piece of bread given him for his weeks ration. He never threw it away nor would he let the hospital destroy what was left of his uniform. Once a year, my father would look through that foot locker, pull everything out and tell us the story of their mission, how they were captured, what they did to them and how it felt to be liberated. He never wanted any of us to forget what happened.
