I agree - However, the problems with monkeying around with our convoluted tax code. The devil is in the details.

I've seen some details relative to capital gains debate. Sale of a small business or a house - doesn't take much to get to $200,000 in gains particularly where one has held this asset for a long time. Assuming no tax increase in this area, the approach would be palatable.

Similarly in the Estate Tax Area - Both parties have screwed this up and made it a field day for tax lawyers. Eliminate the estate tax for anyone with $10 million or less. $10 million is not a lot to die with. If they eliminate the loopholes the ultra rich use such as phoney tax shelters and foundations, they could collect more than they currently do.

I hope that the debate includes details in these types of areas rather than just "roll back the Bush tax cuts."
