Re: Absentee Ballots --

Here in Deschutes County, Oregon, we have a permanent absentee ballot system for all elections. After reading about all the potential for hanky-panky with electronic voting systems, I thought that the County had come up with a genuinely superior approach.

However, I recently spoke with one local concerned citizen who has been doing some research into our system. She identified several steps along the process where there was a potential for vote fraud. The optical scanning equipment that reads the pencil-marked voting choices is somewhat prone to error. And there are some other potential problems within the County. Additionally, my friend indicated to me that the vendor who is supplying the paper ballots and the counting apparatus is a staunch Republican who in the past has been suspected of mishandling ballots over in Portland.

So, absentee ballots still seem an improvement over paperless electronic systems, but there is still a reason to remain vigilant. Particularly considering that the overwhelming evidence that I have is that there is very much a bias toward Republican candidates among the corporate voting equipment vendors.
