Beady eyes, smirk, Texas accent.

I'm sure that's part of it. I always read his speeches rather than watching him or I'll retch, as Derek said about Clinton.

But part of it this attitude of always being right, of not entertaining anything that might cause cognitive dissonance, a tone of dismissiveness. It really rubs me the wrong way.

One of the things I've discovered during this administration is how different people's ideas are of manliness. When I was in my formative years, there was this model of manliness that was always in command, never showed anything remotely resembling weakness, never gave in, ordered subordinates around, put up his dukes whenever he felt dissed, ruled the roost, threw his dirty clothes on the floor next to the hamper, never stopped to ask for directions. Underneath all that was usually a bucket of insecurities being masked. Scared little boys acting like men. I thought we had gotten past that. Men like that never appealed to me either as men or as business associates. Over the years it seems to me that men have changed--men I have known personally or through business. They've turned into people. I like the change.

We were talking a bit about that the other day in the matter of young women going for powerful older men. I always figured that women who fell for that must have a bucket of issues of their own. Maybe not. Maybe it's just a matter of personal preference.

I'm not suggesting that Bush is a scared little boy, only that when I see men posturing like that I get flashbacks of that old model and I retch.

PS I never fell for the Clinton types, either. That's a whole 'nother matter. :)
