I don't understand how abortion rates in the U.S. would affect Life Expectancy or Infant Mortality as abortions are not included in infant mortality numbers.

Are you suggesting that other nations have better genetics because they have unpublicized programs to cull the genetically disadvantaged before birth?

I'm not aware of any such programs.

These misconceptions come from an almost universal misapplication of the laws of probability.

The reason your life expectancy is higher as you get older than it was when you were born is because others have taken your place in the death statistics.

We have a higher percentage of people living to over 100 than in any time in history. Hardly an indictment of our healthcare system.

68,000 - Estimated number of centenarians on Nov. 1, 2000, nearly double the total on Census Day, 1990. <http://www.census.gov/population/estimates/nation/intfile2-1.txt>

The two factors that contribute to high mortality in the first five years are very much opposite.

One is increased drug use among pregnant mothers and mothers who pass on aids to their children. The other is advances in medicine which allow for live births of borderline pregnancies which even just ten years ago wouldn't have resulted in a live birth. Many premature babies live due to our increased ability to deal with the considerable challenges of extremely low birth weight babies That said our limited ability to deal with the various resulting long term health consequences of surviving that birth means that the children frequently die within the first five years.
