Have to be at least 4' here and some towns even want closer to 5'. Unheated basements can be a problem here as well when the wind is blowing 30mph. I did my own plumbing and GCed the rest of my house so no problems. If you are planing on staying in the house more is better in most cases.

Well my footings are at least 6 foot because we have an unheated basement.
