There is no question that Iraq was a state sponsor of terrorism - the United States State Department issues a report on state sponsors of terrorism and Iraq has been on that list for many years. Other countries have also had Iraq on their own lists as a state sponsor of terrorism.

For example, Saddam gave money to the family of Palestinian suicide bombers. Another example, he allowed Iraq to be used as a safe haven by such international terrorists as Carlos the Jackal and Abu Nidal.

People who opposed war with Iraq were not persuaded that giving safe haven to Carlos the Jackal and Abu Nidal and so forth was good enough. They wanted a demonstrated connection to Al Qaeda and bin Laden.

So that may be why you balk at my statement about Iraq as a state sponsor of terrorism. To you, perhaps, the only terrorists are members of Al Qaeda.

Perhaps iraq was not completely there yet. It is a process. Actually i was shocked in the aftermath of the war to see how badly degraded iraqi infrastructure was. Saddam & Sons was more like the sopranos in charge, running things into the ground while benefitting personally in ways that only organized crime can. In order to keep that up, deals with terrorists were probably already being done or in the works. Remember that the saudi princes aka the capones cut a protection deal with al quaeda as well. Schools/madresses for peace. And in iraq it could have ended up being wmds for being left alone to rape and pillage. US busted that all up with the war. mike
