The gap between Korean and Chinese market shares in the Japanese import market has widened for the past four years, with Chinese exports to Japan rapidly expanding.

The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) reported yesterday the Chinese shares in the Japanese import market were four times larger than Korean shares last year.

Korean products captured 4.7 percent of Japan's imports or $18 billion in 2003, while Chinese products grabbed a record high of 19.7 percent or $75.2 billion. China doubled its shares in Japanese imports and doubled its exports to Japan in 10 years.

Korean products captured as high as 5.4 percent of Japanese imports in 2000, but the shares fell to 4.9 percent in 2001 and 4.6 percent in 2002. It edged up 0.1 percent in 2003.

Chinese products have continued to increase their shares in the Japan's import market for the past four consecutive years, with shares reaching 14.5 percent in 2000, 17.6 percent in 2001, 18.3 percent in 2002 and 19.7 percent in 2003.

Korea's exports to Japan have remained stagnant, but Japan's exports to Korea rose 21.5 percent in 2003 over 2002 or $34.7 billion, widening the nation's trade deficit with Japan. Japan's trade surplus with Korea topped $16.8 billion last year.

Korea took in 7.4 percent of Japan's global exports, compared with 24.6 percent for the U.S. and 12.2 percent for China, KITA added.

Japan's export to China also increased by 12.2 percent last year.
