However what the author fails to realize, that the American people are very savvy in sorting out substance from junk. As during every Presidential election, the situation this time is different. Historically, those candidates who fail to address issues uppermost in their minds, have failed to get elected. You can see that happen even in a country like India where the illiteracy is very high. In 1994 the Indian Govt. suspended all civil rights and assumed emergency powers. The press was muzzled. And nobody dare speak against the Govt. Under the emergency powers act, the party in power at that time even suspended regularly scheduled elections. They cited external threats and threats to the security of the country as reasons. Finally, in 1977, the party in power under intense pressure from the US announced a date for general elections. And the results were disastrous for the ruling party the party which was in power ever since India was born. Those illeterate masses went out in hordes and voted the party out with a super landslide. Their parliamentary seats dwindled to 10% from 70%. And these were th poor, hungry, ill clad masses of India. They understood only one thing, it their right to decide who they choose should determine their future. The ruling party came out with massive propaganda in the press and media with how good the country was doing. But hsoe poor people did not see that in the neighborhood. This great nation consists of very intelligent folks. They dare the Bushies to unleash that false propaganda. There is a lot of anger out there even amongst the Republicans . So Bush watch out, don't insult our intelligence. Remain focussed on the issues.
