thanks, a nice read for people like me who don't know much about Edwards.

In his first try for public office, Edwards defeated an incumbent Republican in 1998 to win a seat in the U.S. Senate from North Carolina. He financed his own campaign, avoiding contributions from lobbyists. In the Senate, he serves on the Intelligence Committee, a good place to get a crash course in national-security issues.

I remember this Edwards NC win in 98. The republicans were predicting a landslide win especially there. He ran against this far right incumbent Larch Faircloth who was a personal friend of jesse helms! Yuck! I was thrilled when Edwards won and I didn't even know he financed his own campaign. Edwards is the "new" NC with RTP and all, vs the republicans who were old line southerners.
