Amendment XIII -- "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as punishment for crime...shall exist within the United States...."

Reconcile a literal reading of that language with the military draft.


If the reconciliation can't be done then the answer is no draft.

Laws that are based on powers the constitution doesn't give to the government or even laws that infringe on constitutionaly stated rights are not rare. That doesn't mean that "nobody actually believes that the Constitution should be read literally or followed strictly."
