.....One of the most measured advocates of war, former CIA analyst Kenneth Pollack, points out in his Atlantic Monthly article that there was a double failure -- that US intelligence made serious blunders and that the Bush administration distorted intelligence estimates when making its case for war. That is, both the agencies and the politicians were at fault.

He says that in October 2002, the US National Intelligence Council concluded that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons and, if left unchecked, would probably have a nuclear weapon in five to seven years. Pollack identifies one of the mysteries -- that Saddam Hussein acted as though he had the weapons and declined to come clean. The Bush administration, in turn, distorted the intelligence, claiming that Iraq might have a nuclear weapon within the year.....
