That is just some dopey lie that is told to try to scare children. In actual fact, fascism never comes little by little. In Spain, it came as a result of a civil war. In Italy, it came as a result of a march on Rome, and the demand of the Fascist Party for control of the government. In Germany, it came as the result of a deal making Hitler chancellor, followed by the Reichstagg fire and the grant of broad dictatorial powers to Hitler. At worst, the Patriot Act takes us back to the situation of police powers prior to various ostensible reforms, say, to the situation in the '60s or '50s. No one in his right mind would have claimed that America was a dictatorship, whatever its shortcomings, at that time.
