Regarding XAU today. I did call some over night weakness in the index...but I mistakenly was acting like the XAU was a an ETF that one could short.

Of course it isn't a trading vehicle...its just an index.I don't know of a way to short it except by using something as a proxy that correlates to it.

NEM comes to mind as a possibility.

By the way, Barclays applied for an ishare ETF today that will correlate to the price of gold.

Thats welcome news and gives ETF traders a new vehicle that would be a nice disconnect from the regular markets and sectors.
