One of the fundamental points of disagreement between inflationists and deflationists is the assumption by the latter that sustained inflation is impossible in a soft economy, no matter how weak the dollar how easy easy Al gets.

I beg to differ.

People see to have forgotten the good old days of cost push inflation. They will soon get a rude reminder IMHO.

"We have announced a $50 per ton price increase for containerboard effective March 1st, but the substantial portion of any increase would be realized in the second quarter as this increase flows through to box prices." this from pkg's latest earnings press release.

biz.yahoo.com

pkg is not the largest container board manufacturer, but it is very efficient. these guys are raising container board prices march 1. it's all getting pushed up slowly to the end customers. i suppose tin may be doing some container board price increases too.

recycled cardboard to china will drive prices for virgin boxes from usa. here is a good, short article for those who have any doubts. it can't be any clearer than this. chinese may work for cheap, but they don't have many trees.
