In this regard yes. Is social security really our defense funding? "If we had a flat income tax, the top 1% would pay as much in taxes as they take in income" I agree. But nobody is proposing this. Anyy dems come up with this idea lately? Might be another "tax" issue I am ignorant of. "So you're saying a flat tax would be too high, that the top one percent should have a lower rate than the middle class" Like so many lefty arguers, you are leaving out a pretty significant fact. I understand that you have to do this to make your argument "make sense", but it is a dishonest tactic. You are leaving out the lower class. If it is flat (as you seem to be proposing), then all wage earners should be included. You are also leaving out what the flat rate would be for them to pay the 40% share of their wealth. Wouldn't it be closer to 10% (25% lower than current tax bracket)? Maybe my math is screwy, but all those paying 0% Fed tax (30% to 40% of the people), now go to 10% flat tax too (ouch!). Mr. compassionate. I assume this is why dems avoid the idea like the plague. But I like it. "I think it should go by wealth. The top 1% own about 40% of the nation's wealth, they should pay 40% of the federal taxes" Then put all wage earners in there, not just a few of the groups. The other poster commenting that middle class may pay more than their share may be true. But being a middle class family man I can tell you, it is a bargain to live here imo for the amount we pay. As I mentioned my wife and I used to make 3 times as much (and still probably called middle class) and we paid TEN TIMES AS MUCH FED tax. I'll take the extra free time with my family instead of working twice as hard for handouts for someone else. "They pay less especially when you consider payroll taxes which, since you don't seem to know, go directly in to the general fund" Whether the general fund "borrows" social security or not, I believe our government will still honor the SS payments. Wish they would let me invest my 15% as I see fit. But they (and those like you?) think I am too stupid to do that.
