To me, Democrat Presidential candidates come in two basic flavors - Edwards/Clinton/Carter/Johnson (big smile, Hale-fellow-well-met, chummy, even schmoozy) and Kerry/Gore/Dukakis/Mondale (painted on smile, earnest, geeky, even goofy). Voters appear to prefer version one. I had always classed Carter in the earnest & geeky category, even if he did have a big smile and a Georgia accent. But then, it was right after Watergate and the country was in the mood for earnest & righteous.
