Cyn, What's with line item vetoes? I thought that was a done deal a few years back, but every Congress hides it in the attic with the crazy aunt. One thing I like about it is that, in order to get an important (not necessarily good) bill passed, all this crapola is tacked on. Then your opponent in the election can come at you and say, "he voted for funds to paint rocks purple in Idaho," when you really voted to fund NASA and the purple paint was extra baggage.

Actually, cnyndwllr

This is the coolest idea I have seen in a long time:

fairtax.org

If ever this could be enacted, I think this country would be a LOT better off.

The ONLY way we will EVER get control over the budget is to have a line item veto. That way we have ONE PERSON we can hold accountable and that person is accountable to the NATION while the Congresspeople only care about the portion of the nation that elects THEM. Pork Barrel spending can ONLY be stopped that way. Not too many presidents will veto an ENTIRE BUDGET and shut down the govt over pork barrel stuff. Sadly, our Congress enacts laws and our Congress is looking after ITS OWN HIDE just as they always do. We elect lousy representatives and we get lousy govt. jdn
