Nanya to phase out LCD driver IC foundry services from mid-2004

Josephine Lien, Taipei; Jack Lu, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 19 February 2004]

Nanya Technology plans to phase out its LCD driver IC foundry services starting from mid-2004 and said it has not yet planned to enter the NAND flash market, said a company source.

Nanya produces LCD driver ICs for Japan’s Seiko Epson, which accounts for about 3,000 8-inch wafers per month, about 4% of Nanya’s existing 8-inch capacity. The freed capacity will be used for foundry services on 0.14-micron 1T pseudo SRAM (PSRAM), low-power DRAM and specialty DRAM.

By year-end, foundry services are expected to account for about 10% of Nanya’s 8-inch capacity, the source said.

Unlike its local competitors, Nanya will not consider producing flash memory until Nanya holds a 12% share of the worldwide commodity DRAM market.

As of the third quarter of 2003, market research firm Gartner Dataquest ranked Nanya the fifth-largest DRAM maker in quarterly sales with a 4.6% market share.
