And AMD's second generation 90nm parts will sampling by the time Intel manages to get a first generation AMD64 clone out the door.

Prescott is already in volume production, and it has the x86-64, except you cannot test it as yet. So you are wrong on that score.

The performance issue is still up in the air. We will have to wait and see.

Sun is not a dependable partner for AMD. Its embrace of AMD64 is only an opportunistic political play to slow down the Itanium juggernaut, by forcing Intel to release the 64 bit extensions. Now that has been achieved, Sun may begin to back pedal so that the SPARC can survive. ( If x86-64 succeeds, then it becomes the mortal enemy of SPARC. Sun is helping one small demon to slow down a bigger demon. But it does not want the smaller demon to grow either.) Sun's self interest and not AMD's interest is McNeeleys primary goal. We shall see when SUN ships large quantities of x86-64.

Ditto for IBM !
