how do I make just one visited URL go away

In Mozilla 1.6 and probably also Netscape 7.1: ctrl-H (opens the history window), locate the URL to be deleted, right click, "delete".

If you are feeling really brave, you can fire up regedit and go to registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs and delete them from there.
