My understanding is that the Shi'ites in Iraq are different than those in Iran, for the most part, and far more moderate. Some of them, like Chalabi (who is a Shi'ite) are not even very religious. Anyway, the oil is mostly in territory that is vulnerable to Kurdish control, so it makes sense to avoid civil war and find a solution everyone can live with........
