Isn't the old "you can't lose your job by buying IBM" syndrome at work here in favor of intel? Maybe intel is right when they say that the world is not yet ready for 64 bit. I agree that having announced intel needs to perform.

Ref ..intel has about 3 months grace period to walk the walk. And will intel really eat its own young?

Sure Intel will like to delay releasing the 64bit extensions for the sake of the Itanium. However AMD is still not able to ship in significant volumes. I believe that Intel can turn on the 64bits overnight. The software was verified on it a long time ago. So Intel can accelerate the introduction date if needed for competitive reasons. For credibility reasons Intel cannot delay the dates announced at the IDF by too long.

The stated strategy of Xeon first followed by desktop Prescott next, makes marketing sense, since servers need 64bit more so than desktop applications. However Prescott can be enabled any day. I am not sure if Prescott 64 bit is enabled by a BIOS change, or it takes some kind of programming ( or fuse blowing) at wafer sort or final test.

However from AMD's perspective the critical unknown will be the performance of the 64bit extensions. The Driods have convinced themselves that the Prescott 64bit performance will be abysmal. We will all have to wait and see.
