What parts of Norton did you like? Maybe we can suggest some alternative programs.

Since I really don't understand Windows, I feel more secure with some extra utilities. Maybe that's not as important now as it was with, say, 3.1 and 95. Of course some anti-virus is essential. Other than that, all I really do is run the One Button check-up weekly, which always finds at least something to fix (often shortcuts), and run SpeedDisk from time to time. But maybe XP comes with just as good a defragger? I haven't looked because I've always just relied on Norton.

But maybe it's time to wean myself, and really figure out what XP can do well and whether I need anything else.

"Grab It While You Can" (Langa): jv16 RegCleaner

Fred passed on a readers advice this morning:

Fred: Like many subscribers to your list I've been disappointed at the sneaky way in which the jv16 Power Tools have been converted into shareware. I have reverted to using the original freeware RegCleaner, which is still out there (though not on the jv16 site!), e.g. at:

worldstart.com

Probably a good idea for people to get a copy asap!

Fred notes:

This is sure to test the bandwidth limits of this server, so I suggest you either grab this right away, or plan on waiting a few days, and trying it later.

I had no problems grabbing a copy.
