Ann,

Re: There was a long drawn out trial...all the rocks turned over.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.

The My Lai trial never covered matters concerning the full chain of command. The reality was that there was a wink-and-nod attitude all the way up the chain of command with regard to the violations of the Geneva Conventions and normal standards of decency. This was never brought out at the trial.

Basically, it was a show trial that was designed to hide more than it exposed. William Calley was the designated fall-guy, and his light sentencing proves that the military didn't at all take the matter of atrocities and war crimes to be a serious concern.

You are welcome to accept the sugar-coated confection that the mass media wanted to sell you as "the end of the story" regarding atrocities in Viet Nam. I realize how comforting this is to people who see patriotism as the way to brush aside a hundred concerns about ethics, morals and legality.

Go ahead, wrap yourself in the flag. I don't care.

I'm just disappointed that the minor breakthrough you seem to be making on seeing the truth about NAFTA and the WTO doesn't translate into a more global understanding of the nature of America and its system of economic and military exploitation as the basis for social stratification.
