I learned that lesson the hard way too. In about '65, I bought a '52 MG-TD for a ridiculously low price, and proceeded to try and restore it myself. After fooling around, and fouling up, I chose to turn it over to a restoration expert. I had already spent about a thousand, and he only charged me $2800 because I left it with him, and didn't hurry him, or look over his shoulder. That made about $4K for the final cost, and since I sold it for $10K, I was quite satisfied.
