If Bush pulled out of the race, and an avowed Nazi was the Republican nominee, would you vote Republican or for John Kerry or John Edwards (whichever is the nominee)?

I vote the candidate, not the party. Since my first chance to vote, when I voted for Kennedy (a Democrat, for those who are too young to have voted for him) I have probably voted about equally for Democrats and Republicans. Recently, more for Republicans because their candidates have tended to represent the values of classical liberalism more than the Democratic candidates have.

Ever since Nixon, I have tended not to vote for candidates because I thought they would do the most good, but because I thought they would do the least harm.

But right now, with Bush's budget, immigration policy, No Child Left Behind disaster, and other issues, I sure hope the Democrats can come up with a responsible candidate I can support. Dean wasn't it, that's for sure. Kerry, maybe, though he flip-flops so much that I may decide that Bush's wrongheaded consistency is less dangerous than having no idea where Kerry's flip flop flip flop will eventually wind up.

I could have supported Clark if I had been convinced that he had the ability to function effectively in a non-military setting; but he was so used to giving orders and being obeyed without question that I wonder how he could have functioned in a political setting. But no need to worry about that now.

Edwards I cannot support because he fails on my hot button issue, which isn't abortion, or supreme court justices, or illegal drugs, or immigration, but is tort reform. I think the out of control tort process is the second most dangerous domestic issue we face. (The first, since you asked, is drunk driving and other forms of alcohol abuse, which kills far more Americans than terrorism, the Iraq war, or any other issue we face, tears families and communities apart, and is the leading cause of domestic violence which is the leading cause of dysfunctional families and abused children.)

So get me a Democratic candidate who has integrity and is right on the issues and I'll vote for him or her in a heartbeat. But so far, no.
