I don't think Rahner was thinking of sin. He was talking about a deep kind of existential despair, maybe such as was attributed to Nietzsche. It was considered the height of human heroism to face full on the absence of any meaning to life and embrace nihilism, the vast emptiness of the universe. That along with the despair due to the depressions, pain and agony brought on by disasters, disease, injustices, ignorance, wars, etc. That is the experience he was referring to. I understand the basic options available to as pantheism, everything is god and we are a part of god in the same way. Or next, we contain the image of god, or at least have some way of connecting to god even though we are distinct from god. Thirdly, there is no god that can we can distinguish and we are an accident of nature.
