Your imagination is indeed very extreme. History is less so.

Japan wanted Java for it's oil production. Japan bombed Darwin NT in two air-raids on February 19, 1942 to prevent assistance to Java from the Darwin Air Base.

David Jones and his sputtering handgun were powerless to stop this air raid, just as his silly handgun was powerless to stop the air attack on Pearl Harbour.

The Australian military armed Civilian Coastal Watch Forces with military rifles, not useless handguns, just as the US Military armed Civilian Coastal Watch Forces in America. These weapons went back to the military at the end of the war.

Switzerland is a country which continues the practice of arming civilians during peace time. This works well for some obvious reasons.

a.) Almost all weapons are military semi-automatic rifles. It is not legal to carry them in public unless you are dressed in your military uniform and under orders. The rifles cannot be loaded with ammunition, except under direct orders from your commander. Failure to follow these rules gives the military and the police the right to shoot you dead on sight.

b.) Handguns are limited to Officers, and likewise, they cannot be carried in public without your uniform and under orders. The handguns cannot be loaded without direct orders from a superior officer, or in some cases with direct orders from the police. Once again failure to follow these rules gives the military and the police the right to shoot you dead on sight.

I would strongly support such rules for the protection of the United States.
