• Carbon Nanotechnologies, US, has been issued with a patent that includes claim coverage for carbon nanotubes derivatized at their ends. US patent 6,683,783 also has composition of matter claims for end-derivatized nanotubes that contain another species, such as metals or fullerenes, within themselves. Developed by Richard Smalley, the technology was licensed to the start-up by Rice University in 2001. Carbon Nanotechnologies plans to complete a demonstration carbon-nanotube production plant with a capacity of about 100 lb a day by mid-2004.
