My father was in Vietnam a year longer than Kerry, and spent it in the bush to boot. He has his own medals he keeps tucked away, and doesn't go around telling every joe he meets about what a war hero he is. He's a VFW member. I'm sure there aren't many of Kerry's old friends in the VFW. He probably got it right on that score.

Every kid from my neighborhood who joined or was drafted during Vietnam belongs to vfw and are very proud of it.

When they came home it was a like a reunion in our city at vfw. I do not remember any of the bitterness among them that Kerry talks about.
