Well the legal aspects of marriage are quite clear, and have been for a very long time.

What you are really doing is separating the legal aspects of marriage from the religious aspect of marriage. I don't think you can do that; if you did, what resulted wouldn't be "marriage."

Of course you can have marriages between atheists and agnostics. But a civil ceremony just doesn't carry the weight of a traditional marriage (which is why so many brides want a "real church wedding").

If gays want some sort of legal status between themselves, I'm okay with it. But to allow them actual "marriage" is a gross imposition on the tens of millions of people who view marriage as being inherently a religious relationship.
