"Mel provided the seed money to set up a "Roman Rites" Catholic Church in LA. A lot of traditionalists love the old rites and think the Church made a mistake when they got away from them and went to "Jesus and Guitars."" Hi Bill, I was touched at the catholic jewish wedding i went to today when the Priest said it was an honor for a catholic to marry someone from the religion of jesus and the religion that christianity is founded on. I dont think mel feels that way at all. Some christians i think believed jews are cursed forever because of the death of jesus. Sometimes as a jew i feel that way too given the history and the always recurring scourge of anti-semitism. Maybe mel feels that way too. The true test of this movie is if he doesnt infect a gospel accurate movie with this attitude. We should all suspend debate until we see it ourselves and not even read the reviews until we do. Mike

"Traditionalists" has a special meaning in this context. It's not just Latin mass and Gregorian chants vs. English and guitars. There is a belief that Vatican II was not just wrong but that the Roman Catholic Church has been hijacked by apostates, heretics, and Satan, that the Pope isn't really the Pope, that we are living in End Times and the Pope is an anti-Pope, and the Church is really an anti-Church, stuff like that. Calling themselves "Traditionalists" is just another example of rhetorical jiu-jitsu -- it seems so benign. Who could object to saying the Mass in Latin once in a while, just for old times' sake? And in fact, it's OK to hear what the Church calls an "Indult" mass if no Novus Ordo mass is available, but not otherwise. Ask Hutton Gibson what he thinks about Novus Ordo Missae and I bet your ears will burn. ;^) To me, it's as wacky as the theories about the Federal Reserve and "the Jews" - but of course, that's my opinion, I could be wrong. I have no reason to think that Mel Gibson subscribes to this -- except for his church. He's put millions into that church. I hope it's so he doesn't get molested and distracted at worship by his fans.
